Jefferson Parish Roofing Permit Requirements
Jefferson Parish requires a re-roofing permit for the replacement of 50% or more of the roof covering on all one- and two-family dwellings in unincorporated areas of the parish. This permit is issued by the Jefferson Parish Department of Building Permits. The process is designed to ensure compliance with the 2021 International Residential Code and to provide documentation for homeowners and insurers.
- Permit Application: Applications are submitted online through MyGovernmentOnline. New users will need to create an account.
- Permit Fee: The fee for a Residential Re-Roofing Permit is $50.00, payable online via credit card.
- Homeowner/Contractor Requirements:
- Homeowners acting as their own contractor must upload a completed and notarized Affidavit Claiming Exemption from Licensure.
- Contractors must submit an Executed Contract and possess a valid Louisiana Residential Contractor License (residential roofing or residential construction classification) or a Louisiana Commercial Contractor's License (residential roofing classification). Effective January 1, 2026, contractors performing work valued over $7,500 must have a Louisiana Residential Roofing or Louisiana Residential Construction license.
- Documentation: Geo-tagged photographs of the work are required instead of in-person inspections. These photos must document:
- Exposed roof sheathing/deck before covering.
- Installation of water intrusion-resistant underlayment with a visible nailing pattern and material packaging.
- Installation of drip edge with a visible nailing pattern.
- Installation of shingles or metal panels with a visible nailing pattern, and material packaging showing the wind rating.
- Permit Issuance: Once payment and required documentation are verified, the permit will be issued via email.
- Completion: After installation, geo-tagged photos are submitted, and the parish will issue a certificate of completion if the photos meet the requirements.
