Minnesota Electrician Legislation, Codes, and Guidelines
Minnesota State Building Codes and Electrician Legislation
In Minnesota, electrical work is primarily governed by the National Electrical Code (NEC), as adopted and enforced by the state. While the Minnesota State Building Code exists, its electrical standards largely defer to the NEC. The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) is the primary state agency responsible for setting and enforcing these standards.
- Adopted Codes: The Board of Electricity has adopted the 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC) with an effective date of July 1, 2023. Electrical permits filed before this date must comply with the 2020 NEC, while those filed on or after July 1, 2023, must comply with the 2023 NEC. Minnesota's electrical code consists of the National Electrical Code as published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
- Primary State Agency: The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) is the main state body that sets and enforces electrical standards. The DLI's Electrical Licensing and Inspection Unit oversees licensing, permits, and inspections. The Minnesota Board of Electricity also plays a role in adopting electrical code amendments.
