District of Columbia Building Codes for Electricians
The District of Columbia adopts and amends model building codes, including electrical codes, through the District of Columbia Municipal Regulations (DCMR) Title 12. The current adopted codes are the 2017 DC Construction Codes, which include the 2015 International Code Council (ICC) family of model codes and the 2014 National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70, as amended by the District of Columbia. These codes took effect on May 29, 2020.
Primary State Board or Agencies
- Department of Buildings (DOB): This department is responsible for protecting the safety of residents, businesses, and visitors by enforcing building codes, permitting, and inspections. The DOB also oversees the Office of Construction and Building Standards, which includes third-party inspections and code compliance.
- Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection (DLCP): This department, formerly part of the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA), now governs the licensure for Journeyman and Master Electricians in the District of Columbia.

- 2017 District of Columbia Electrical Code (DCMR 12C): This code is based on the 2014 National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70, with amendments specific to the District of Columbia.
- 2017 District of Columbia Building Code (DCMR 12A): This code is based on the 2015 International Building Code (IBC).
- 2017 District of Columbia Residential Code (DCMR 12B): This code is based on the 2015 International Residential Code (IRC).
